Mayfield, Lea Jessica - With Blasphemy So Heartfelt

Ms. Mayfield's second album shows that the promise of her first album (White Lies) was well justified. Her new tracks range from the poignant to explosions of passion. Normally, I don't have any patience with existential angst, but Jessica brings an innocence to her lyrics that makes it bittersweet rather than whiny.

This, of course, begs a question; what genre is her music? Alternative is, I suppose, accurate enough, but fails to capture the qualities of her music that are most moving. Most of her music has some blues, and some folk quality, but live, some is straight up rock. At the show, a little bit of punk influence also came through, but only enough to add character without overwhelming the charm of her music.

All of her lyrics are her own work, except for one she co-wrote with the band's upright bass player (her brother) Dave. Dave's distinctive style is a great contribution to the tracks he's on.
