The Frank & Joe Show (featuring virtuoso guitarist Frank Vignola and master percussionist Joe Ascione) return with 66 2/3, the follow up to last year’s acclaimed debut album, 33 1/3. Having spent 2004 touring all corners of the United States, the group, which also features Ken Smith on rhythm guitar, Gary Mazzaroppi on bass and Chuck Ferruggia and Rich Zukor on percussion, has built a foundation as a razor sharp, genre defying unit. 66 2/3 was produced by Joel Dorn and the result is a record of pure guitar majesty and rhythmic splendor. Acts like Santana and Bela Fleck come to mind when listening to the group’s stellar improvisations and soaring instrumental flair. At the same time, however, comparisons to classic swing like that of Les Paul and Django Reinhardt would not be out of line based on their interpretations of standards like “It Might As Well Be Spring,» “Manhattan« (with Jane Monheit) and “Sway.” It’s a showcase for one of America’s hottest and most dynamic instrumental roots jazz groups at the top of its game. As anyone who’s seen them live will attest, once you get Frank Vignola, Joe Ascione and The Frank & Joe Show rolling, it’d be easier to stop a freight train.
