One of rock and folk music’s most distinguished guitar players, John Platania, now steps forward with a unique and stunning aural experience: Blues, Waltzes and Badland Borders on Train Wreck Records. Much more than just a guitar album and instrumental record, it’s a compositional tour de force co-produced by Platania and Chip Taylor on which Platania’s guitar virtually functions as the lead singer alongside guest singing and spoken-word vocalists Lucinda Williams, famed actor Jon Voight, Alejandro Escovedo and Tejano music legend Ruben Ramos, among others. With music that ranges a stylistic map from the Texas-Mexico border to the Mississippi delta, Blues, Waltzes and Badland Borders offers a cornucopia of musical moods from lush melodies that feature Platania’s multi-tracked guitars to spares numbers that showcase his lyrical playing.

The music on the album reflects Platania’s long-standing reputation as a singer’s and songwriter’s guitar player, known for applying his considerable abilities and keen melodic sense to delivering the song and supporting the singer. He first won note for his signature guitar work on Moondance, Van Morrison’s commercial breakthrough. In addition to touring and recording over the years with Morrison, Platania has played and recorded with Randy Newman, Bonnie Raitt, Judy Collins, Don McLean and Natalie Merchant, to name some but hardly all, and has produced and played guitar with bluesman Guy Davis on four acclaimed albums.

Since 1972, Platania has been friends and a collaborator with Taylor — known for writing such classic hits as “Wild Thing” and “Angel of the Morning” and an icon within both the 1970s country-rock movement and today’s Americana music scene — who encouraged Platania’s creation of a solo guitarist album and co-wrote many of the songs in addition to co-producing. What they’ve created together is a virtual musical movie studded with melodic hooks galore, an album where Platania’s guitar sings with the allure of some of popular music's best vocalists as an instrumental legend steps forward to add a new chapter to his proud legacy.
