Never cried once when I could have

”Never cried once when I could have” is the second album from The Lancaster Orchestra aka Carl Mathson. Once again it’s 100 % focus on the excellent song writing and the sensitive yet expressive voice of Carl Mathson. But at the same time the band is allowed more space and musical freedom. The Orchestra this time is basically half of the players in the internationally renown Swedish band Logh with a few additions.

And the fact that we have a really tight and experienced backing band makes a difference. The sound is relaxed and casual, but still with an edge. It sounds like it’s recorded live in the studio (probably not too far away from the truth). The band is loud yet laid back and they create the perfect environment for Carl’s hauntingly beautiful and sometimes slightly depressing songs. Try for instance the opening track ”I wish we never met”, the country flavoured ”I remember that time so well” or the single track ”Save me from myself”.

The Lancaster Orchestra made their first appearance a couple of years ago on a nationwide Swedish radio show. May 2005 saw the release of the first album “With help from absent friends”. An album that received great reviews in Sweden and maybe even more so internationally.

”I really love this album, which has all the accessible pop cosiness of Lambchop but shares the same kind of haunted angst of fellow-Scandinavian, St Thomas...There have been some clever things happening on the production front as, with up to ten musicians involved in some of the “bigger” moments, it never comes close to sounding top heavy. This is very subtle alt-country handled with loads of panache that deserves a bigger audience.”
- Loudon Temple - Maverick Magazine, UK

”This gentle mellifluous album wanders across a number of territorial music boundaries, but sticks to what it knows best; delivering charming, sensitive and thought provoking songs. And at times (‘In Vain’) that wailing harmonica reminded me of the bleak tracks that Springsteen delivered during his ‘Nebraska’ period which can’t be a bad thing. Carl Mathson continues the recent trend of Scandinavian alt.country, and manages to deliver some fine and subtle tunes along the way. Whilst there’s nothing here that’ll make you rush out and rave about it all to your mates, there’s a gentle consistency that flows along in a ‘sitting by the fire having a nice glass of wine with loved ones’ mood.”
