It seems like Billy Joe Shaver has done just about everything. He ’s written songs for countless artists from Elvis to Bob Dylan, starred in major Hollywood movies, was inducted into the Nashville Songwriter ’s Hall of Fame,and tapped to join Merle Haggard, Toby Keith, Jerry Lee Lewis, Shelby Lynne, and more for CMT ’s “Outlaws Concert ” in November. However,Billy Joe is not one to rest on his laurels.

At age 65, he had added another “first ” to his list of credits by finally taking a turn in
the producer ’s chair for this album. For »The Real Deal«, his first studio album in three years, Shaver hunkered down in a Pedernales, TX, studio to record 14 out of 15 new tracks for the album. “It was great to be able to sing the way I want to sing,” Shaver explains. “I set up the arrangements how I
wanted rather than having to try to fi t into someone else ’s.”

Country superstar duo Big & Rich, longtime Shaver fans,co-produced their duet with Billy Joe on his inspirational masterpiece “Live Forever.” According to Big Kenny, Shaver is “a classic poet and songsmith …the kind of person you can listen to for hours,with a spirit and soul that grabs your attention.” “Live Forever,” which will be the first radio single from »The Real Deal«, marks the first time the double-platinum duo has recorded an outside song.

Several more friends joined him in the studio including Nanci Griffith for the achingly
romantic “Valentine,” Kevin Fowler on “Slim Chance and the Can ’t Hardly Playboys ” and
Kimmie Rhodes on the heart-breaking “West Texas Waltz.”
