Album
Courtney, Will
Planning Escapes
(Diverse)

Price: 149 SEK

After spending five years touring and recording two albums as the lead singer and songwriter of the Austin, TX band, Brothers And Sisters, Will Courtney decided to pack up and move back to Los Angeles...and then to Nashville...and then to a log cabin on some land in Dripping Springs, TX. Now, after two years of being based in Santa Fe, NM, where he produced albums for other artists and toured the US and Europe as a solo artist, he’s back in Austin with a new band and a new album, Planning Escapes.

Self-produced, with help from fellow Texas musician Steven Collins, Planning Escapes was recorded over a long weekend in Lockhart, TX (the Barbecue capital of Texas) and features his current backing band, The Wild Bunch, which consists of several members of Brothers And Sisters. Planning Escapes sees Will getting back to his roots displaying everything from sad country ballads to loud atmospheric rock and folk. You’ll hear the influence of Willie Nelson and Neil Young and Elliott Smith along side imagery of travels and heartbreak and the Old West.

Will finished recording two versions of the new album. Planning Escapes LP and Planning Escapes Deluxe LP Edition (which includes live versions of the songs performed on solo acoustic guitar and pedal steel) is available July 15, 2016 on Wren and Shark. The album will accompany several music videos including a video for the song, »The Pain (Song for Dennis Wilson)« directed by Mike Angelo Torres.

BIO

Will Courtney was born in Nashville, TN to a writer father and a Gospel singer mother. As a child, he sang in Houston's Post Oak Boy's Choir and before long was recording songs for children’s records and commercials. When he was old enough to get out of Texas, Will headed to Los Angeles - home to many of his idols - The Beach Boys, Randy Newman, Jon Brion, Neil Young and The Flying Burrito Brothers.

Following stints in short-lived bands and some work with cult legends Zander Schloss (Sean y Zander, The Circle Jerks, Joe Strummer) and Ric Menck (Matthew Sweet, Velvet Crush), Will grew frustrated when the excesses of the L.A. music scene stymied productivity, so he took off - driving his pickup down to Austin, Texas to start a band with his sister called Brothers and Sisters. Rave reviews of their albums from MOJO, Pitchfork and No Depression helped spread the word and landed their music on several compilation albums and FOX TV show, The OC. The ragged sprawl of their live appearances (misunderstanding audience members have all-too-frequently compared Brothers and Sisters to a cult) sparked attention. Diverse shows with Spoon, The Black Angels, Jeff Tweedy, Deadman, Okkervil River as well as US and Canadian tours the with Trail of Dead and the Blood Brothers, quickly made Brothers and Sisters a favorite with Austin crowds.

In 2010, Will decided to take a break from Brothers and Sisters and has spent the time living between Nashville, California, New Mexico and Texas writing music and producing albums for other artists. In 2011, he found himself onboard the Railroad Revival Tour train as it traveled across the country, playing music each night on a musical train car with Mumford and Sons, Edward Sharp and the Magnetic Zeros and Old Crow Medicine Show. In Nashville, he worked as a demo singer for several country songwriters.

Planning Escapes is the follow up to the release of his his 2013 debut solo album, A Century Behind. The release of A Century Behind brought Will over the Atlantic where he toured Sweden and Norway for nearly a month with outlaw country darling, Lydia Loveless and Sweden's premier late-night balladeer, Richard Lindgren.

When Will is not making music, he spends much of his time collecting 19th Century photographs and researching the history of the American West. He recently worked on a new documentary series on famous western outlaws called Gunslingers. Will is a featured historian on the Discovery Channel series, Gunslingers: Billy The Kid.
