An old man told me once/ You gotta take a chance some time/ Reach out and grab it while you can/ There´s a bullet for every man/ Meant to hit you/ But you might catch it with your hand
—»Ride the bullet«
The songs you hear on Paul Henriksen's first album was written, developed and nurtured during a long period of time. Written, re-written, tested, rejected, re-written again and finally perfected. Henriksen has studied and learned the craft from the very best; Guy Clark, John Prine, Warren Zevon and the two giants of rock music, Dylan and Springsteen.
Paul Henriksen once played in the Norwegian band The Passengers. He then moved on to the folk/ country-band Flying Shoes, named after the classic Townes van Zandt album, from 1978.
— I saw Townes three times in Trondheim. And I'm really happy I did, says Paul.
Townes van Zandt played Norway several times before he passed away in 1997, on the first day of the year, just like his spiritual predecessor , Hank Williams, did in 1953. Townes was only 52, but his music continues to affect new generations. One of the songs on this album, «Six Foot Two», tells the story of one of the times Paul heard Townes. ..a dark skinny man with a guitar sat down/ He said, I´ll do this song just to warm up..
Right, Paul Henriksen did not only see the show, but also the sound check! The experience resulted in these beautiful lines in »Six Foot Two«;
..Behind closed eyes he travelled/ through a world of his own/ from the Mountains of Colorado to the deserts of Mexico/ Soft as a flower rough as a storm/ songs about sunshine and laughter/ about being left alone..
»Time To Grow Wings« was recorded and produced by Rune Berg, the songwriter and guitarist of the Margarets. Henriksen was backed by some of the very best musicians Oslo has to offer.
