Mandolin is probably not the first instrument that comes to mind when you think of blues. But the fact is that until the 1940’s mandolin was a common instrument in blues music. It wasn’t until the urbanization and electrification of the blues in Chicago after WWII that its role faded and nearly disappeared.
In modern times, blues mandolin has experienced a renaissance through the playing of musicians like Ry Cooder and Steve James, but today, the most determined and perhaps its finest advocate is Bert Deivert.
On their new album »Blood In My Eyes For You« Bert Deivert & Copperhead Run play mandolin blues in a way you never thought possible. By combining the sound of postwar electric guitars, bass, and drums with old time acoustic blues, they create a dynamic mix and driving groove. Despite all references to times gone by, the result is anything but a museum piece. Bert Deivert & Copperhead Run make music that is just as relevant and urgent today as it was yesterday and will be tomorrow. It is simply timeless music that moves and inflames, music for the body and soul.
Ten of the twelve songs on »Blood In My Eyes For You« are blues classics written by legends like Sleepy John Estes, Big Joe Williams, RL Burnside and Son House. Bert Deivert has penned the other two songs.
Bert Deivert was born in 1950 in Boston, Massachusetts, United States. In 1966 he saw Son House on tv and was so amazed by what he saw that he broke a wine bottle and made his own bottleneck for playing slide guitar. He has been hooked on the blues ever since and has never looked back. Deivert moved to Sweden in 1974 and has been playing professionally since then. He has played with musicians such as Peter Case, Eric Bibb, New York bluesman Michael Powers, rockabilly queen Wanda Jackson, old-timey legend Tom Paley and Irish Singer Christy O'Leary. Bert has gone to Mississippi in recent years and played and jammed with great blues musicians there, like Bill Abel, Sam Carr, Cadillac John Nolden, Terry »Harmonica« Bean, Jimmy »Duck« Holmes and T-Model Ford. Deivert has performed in 23 countries all over the world.
”Blood In my Eyes For You” is Bert Deivert’s 12th album and the 4th one featuring blues mandolin.
