Favorite Hippies is new band from singer, songwriter and guitarist extraordinaire Örjan Mäki.The debut album »Sidekick Stories« was recorded and produced by Peder af Ugglas and Örjan Mäki.
Born and raised in the land of the midnight sun in the very northern parts of Sweden, Mäki started playing guitar at the age of twelve. Through his older brother’s Tandberg tape recorder he heard a lot of 50´s rock, Stones, Creedence and Johnny Cash. “I remember the first time I heard the intro to the Cash song “San Quentin”, that really blew my mind and it was the first thing I ever played on the guitar.”
As a teenager he played and listened to a lot of heavier rock but was always drawn to more blues- based music. In the late 80s he started his own blues band Brickyard and they toured and recorded for almost 13 years. In 2003 he moved to Kiruna and started the blues band Kiruna X-Press, and a few years later he joined the Willy Clay Band.
WCB recorded their first CD “Rebecca Drive” in Nashville together with guitarist and producer Will Kimbrough. Other musicians on the recording were Garth Hudson (The Band) Bucky Baxter (Bob Dylan, Steve Earle and others). WCB recorded the CD “Blue” in 2009 and toured in Sweden, Norway, England and Scotland. In 2008 Örjan Mäki picked the pedal steel and after a couple of years of practicing he toured as Chip Taylor.
After moving to Norrtälje just outside of Stockholm he joined the band Sixpack Holiday and right now he’s about to release a CD with his new band “Favorite Hippies”. Örjan is renowned in Sweden for being one of the best roots guitarists around.
