“Chip Taylor could've rested on his laurels years ago and still been way ahead of everybody else today. Lucky for us he didn't and he's making some of the most relevant music out there. F**k All The Perfect People is my current favorite.

PS. the video is absolutely beautiful!” - Buddy Miller

The idea for this album began two years ago. I met my new Swedish band mates - Björn Pettersson (bass), Örjan Mäki (guitar) and Magnus Olsson (drums) - in Stockholm. With one brief rehearsal we played our first show at a place called Katalin in Uppsala. The audience seemed to love the show, but a reviewer seemed to have other ideas. On the way to our next day's venue, Bjorn read his review to all of us. The reviewer's main criticism was that our show was »too dynamic.« !!!! What the heck?!” When that comment was read, the band broke out laughing. But the truth is, I wasn't laughing and that night I wrote a song in response, called Too Dynamic. The song became the final encore and a highlight of every following show. It became our sort of rallying cry for getting that bastard back. It certainly eased the pain.

In the middle of the tour, my new friend, bassist Björn, suggested I record this and other road inspired songs with this band plus my great friend John Platania. His idea was to record it in Halden, Norway at Kai Anderson’s revered Athletic Sound Studios during a short tour break on my next Sweden/ Norway tour. And so that’s what we did. We recorded 15 inspired-by-the-road songs with Björn, Örjan, Magnus and John Platania on lead guitar as well as an amazing Norwegian keyboard player, Gøran Grini. WHAT A BAND!

THE RECORDING
Athletic Sound has the reputation as being the best studio in all of Scandinavia. After recording there these past few days, I would put it at the top of the list of all studios I've recorded ANYWHERE. Aside from the warm and soulful main room, the wonderful analogue recording deck and antique state-of-the-art sound board, which are meticulously maintained, the main asset to this studio is its owner/engineer, Kai Andersen – known lovingly in these parts as “the Sound Doctor”. Not only is he as proficient as any engineer I've work with, but his above-and beyond qualities - his passion and love for soulful music, his warmth, his honesty and his kindness, and his great instinct for good performances and takes - coupled with the great vibe of these heartfelt musicians, put this is at the top of the list of any studio experiences I've ever had.

ALBUM TITLE AND BAND NAME
As the sessions were being recorded, as a sort of joke, I started calling the album, “All The Perfect People”. I’m not sure what it meant but for some reason, it was “us against them” whoever the “them” was. And it felt good to Björn, me and the rest of the band. One day I was explaining to the boys about the passion of some new Ukrainian friends that I had met in New York. These just out-of-high school folks had an energetic appreciation of freedom of expression quite unlike their counterparts in the US – who understandably take such freedom for granted. These girls are filled with humor and energy for learning new things and a love for good music. And to a person, my Ukrainian friends are dead serious when reflecting on Russia and Ukraine and the tragedies and horrors that have been part of Putin's rule (i.e. his control of dissent with threats of imprisonment and death – acts he continues to carry out). I love being around them and feeling that spirit. After hearing about my friends, Björn, in honor of that angry spirit or maybe just because it sounded kind of cool, started calling our band “The New Ukrainians”. On the last day of recording, I woke up at 6:00 AM, and lay in bed playing an unusual (for me at least) little four-chord progression over and over on a borrowed old acoustic guitar, given to me by Kai, as mine was wired and set to go at the studio. In minutes, I had written the song, “FUCK ALL THE PERFECT PEOPLE”. We recorded it that day and it was decided.. that would be it..
