Thorstein Selvik (50) er norsk finansmann (med doktorgrad i økonomi), født i Bergen og lidenskapelig rocksamler/ viter. Som det fremkommer av bildet er Thorstein (i midten, t.v. Morten Aas, t.h. Ole Øystein Røkholt) sertifisert Deadhead. Trioen er avbildet under »Terrapin Station Grateful Dead Family Reunion« i Alpine Valley i Wisconsin i 2002.

Sist lørdag publiserte Thorstein sin nye plateliste i Dagens Næringsliv, der oppslaget fikk breie seg over hele fem sider. Listen bærer tittelen »400 Top of the Pops«, med undertittel »Den udiskutable, autorative, objektive listen over tidenes 400 beste album«.

Selvfølgelig brøt helvete løs. Allerede på mandag ble Selvik utskjelt av den norske musikkjournalisten Tor Milde, i friske ordelag.
Dermed er debatten i gang igjen. Akkurat slik det skjedde for tre år siden da Selvik og Morten Aas lanserte sin »Tidenes beste 200 plater«-liste. Den gang var listen begrenset til perioden 1965 -2003. Publiseringen trigget over fire hundre oppslag i norsk presse.

Nå er den tidsmessige begrensningen opphevet, og således ligger Robert Johnsons «King of the Delta Blues Singers» på toppen.

Selvik har satt ned fire kriterier for sine utvelgelser; Musikalsk kvalitet, betydning for andre artister, studiokvalitet og kommersiell betydning.

Med seg til å komponere listen har Selvik en rekke rockinteresserte inkludert venner og kjente (!?!) som Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Willie Nelson og David Bowie.
